EFFECTIVENESS OF ACMC
People learn more easily from experiencing something than from reading or being told about it. Eighty percent of the information entering on minds is gathered through vision. Pictures and graphs are marvelous means of getting a person’s attention. It is said that the human eye has 16 nerves for each one in the human ear; what we see registers in the mind more completely than what we hear. Because of visual aid, the listener can see what you are explaining, God’s plan of salvation demonstrated in word and pictures, using two senses instead of one.
Visual can bring home better concept to the literate and illiterate, educated or uneducated. A Chinese proverb stated ” It is better to see once than to hear a thousand times”. Hearing the word of God is important and necessary to believe, no doubt (Roman 10:14) but to remember and to understand, one need to see with the eyes.
To understand the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, instead of hearing over and over again, we need a visual presentation which can last longer in our memory. This is true for both the literates and the illiterates alike. Old Testament records an interesting example of the effectiveness of seeing in I King 10:1-7. ” And the queen of Sheba heard…. And She said to the king , It was a true report that I heard….. and behold the half was not told me thy wisdom and prosperity exceedeth and the fame which I heard.”
In the New Testament also, we see another vivid example of St. Thomas to believe in Jesus Christ in St. John 20:24-28.” But Thomas one of the twelve,……..but He said unto them, “Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe……….
St. John 2:23 says, “Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles, which he did.”
In St.John 11:1-45, we see the life of Lazarus of Bethany. Verse 45, “Then many of the Jews which came to many, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.”
Mrs. Hathoi Buansing Secretary Bethany Christian College, once stated, ” One picture is equal to one thousand words.”
Pioneer Christian Missionaries in Manipur like William Pettigrew and Watkin R. Robert were heard to have used the visuals or pictures of Jesus Christ and others very effectively to present the good news of the gospel to the illiterate tribals when they arrived on the hills of Manipur.
